How to Install a Battery Cradle in a JB74 Suzuki Jimny

Step-by-Step Guide: Installing a Battery Cradle in Your JB74 Suzuki Jimny

Upgrading the battery cradle in your JB74 Suzuki Jimny allows you to fit a high-performance battery to support accessories like a winch or fridge. Follow this step-by-step guide to install the upgraded cradle system with minimal fuss.

🧰 Tools You’ll Need:

  • 10mm & 12mm socket set

  • Ratchet

  • Spanner set

  • Cleaning cloth

  • Optional: Winch isolator & mounting hardware

⚡ Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

Start by disconnecting the battery terminals. Always remove the earth (negative) terminal first to isolate power and prevent accidental shorts. Then remove the battery hold-down clamp and take the battery out of the vehicle.

Step 2: Prepare the Cradle Area

With the battery removed, clean the battery tray area to remove any accumulated dust and dirt. This ensures proper fitment and prevents corrosion.

Step 3: Remove the ECU Bracket

Undo the three nuts holding the ECU bracket in place and remove the bolt on the factory earth lead.

Step 4: Relocate the Earth Lead

Relocate the earth lead to the front ECU bracket stud. You’ll use this position when reassembling the ECU bracket later.

Step 5: Install the Battery Cradle Plate

Lift the ECU mounting bracket slightly away from the studs and slide the new battery cradle plate into position. Loosely reinstall the rear nut to secure it in place for now.

Step 6: Reattach the Earth Lead

Fit the relocated earth lead onto the front stud and loosely fasten it with the original nut. This keeps everything in place while allowing for adjustments.

Step 7: Fit the Side Bracket

Drop in the side bracket and align it with the 6mm nutsert visible through the inner guard. Make sure it lines up correctly before proceeding.

Step 8: Optional – Install a Winch Isolator

If you’re fitting a winch, now is a good time to install the winch isolator to the inside of the side bracket.

👉 Tip: Loose-fit the isolator to check cable clearance before final tightening. Then remove it temporarily while you fit the battery.

Step 9: Tighten All Mounts

With everything aligned, go ahead and tighten both the front and rear nuts on the cradle plate. This locks the cradle firmly in place before reinstalling the battery.

Step 10: Refit the Battery

Place the new upgraded battery into the cradle. Then reassemble the side bracket and top battery mount to hold the battery securely.

🚙 You’re Done!

That’s it—your Jimny is now ready to support a high-output battery, perfect for powering a winch or other demanding accessories.
